Campbell River Trails

Mountain Biking, to some these two words bring thoughts of riders hucking themselves down the mountain side and off cliffs. But this is just one area of this diverse sport for those wishing to try Mountain Biking for the first time, XC or cross country trail riding is very approachable.
If you know you are going to give this sport a serious effort you should be looking at a mountain bike starting in the $600-$1000 range, the more time you plan to dedicate to your new pastime the more you should spend. And don’t forget to budget about $200 more for the required accessories that will make mountain biking a safe fun experience. You will need, at the minimum a Helmet, gloves, spare tube, multi tool, tire leavers and a pump, as well cycling shorts are highly recommended. Scared of the thought of slipping into a form fitting pair of reveal all lycra shorts? No worries there are baggy styles available that can also be used as casual wear.
Now that you a re ready to hit the trails, where are they?
In Campbell River that means two main places for the beginner, Beaver Lodge Lands and The Snowden Demonstration Forest.
Beaver Lodge, as it is known is the most approachable being basically rite in town, the trails here are mostly easy or green circle and while the area is large, with two main trails running north and south it is an easy place to find your way around.
Snowden is a different matter with trails mostly blue square or intermediate to black diamond or expert, this area should be reserved for when you have five or six rides under your belt. Don’t be scared if you come across an obstacle you are unsure of you can always get off your bike and walk. There is an excellent map available at the local shops of the trail system in Snowden, but with well over 100km of single track it is best experienced with someone that knows the terrain.
The River City Cycle Club has a Social ride the first Tuesday of each month from April to Sept, why not come out and experience Snowden with like minded people? For more information on the River City Cycle Club go to
www.rivercitycycle.ca
Now that you know the basics come out and experience the beauty around us, Campbell River has so much to offer to the two wheeled traveler.
Dan Clements has been riding road and mountain bikes since the late seventies, has raced mountain bike, road bike and did Ironman Canada in 1988. Dan has worked as a bike shop owner/bike mechanic for over 18 years. He has a very diverse knowledge of cycling, and can help with any questions you may have.
If you have any further questions feel free to contact Dan at:
dan@outdooraddictions.ca or stop by his shop OUTDOOR ADDICTIONS at 1980 Island Hwy
